Daily Devotion

Start or finish each day in God’s word, with devotions written by LCA/NZ members specifically for these challenging times. Sign up to receive Daily Devotion in your inbox every morning. Permission is granted to print and publish these devotions with this acknowledgement: ‘Reproduced with permission: Lutheran Church of Australia 2022’. If possible, please provide a link to the Daily Devotion archive page: www.lca.org.au/daily-devotion. LCA Communications is producing a week of devotions in advance in ready-to-print format for congregations to deliver to members. To receive a link to the printable sets each week, simply ask us, at lca.comms@lca.org.au. Click here to find the print versions of Daily Devotion. The Daily Devotions project is supported by the LCA Special Ministry Fund, which is made possible by the generous financial assistance of the LLL.

The victory

Suddenly Jesus met them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ They came up to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. ‘Do not be afraid,’ Jesus said to them. ‘Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.’ (verses 9,10) Read Matthew 28:1–10 What would you do… Read more

A bloke called Jesus

Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. (verses 59-60) Read Matthew 27:57–66 Easter from the view point of the… Read more

The crucified king

So they took charge of Jesus. He went out, carrying his cross, and came to ‘The Place of the Skull’, as it is called. (In Hebrew it is called ‘Golgotha’.) There they crucified him; and they also crucified two other men, one on each side, with Jesus between them. Pilate wrote a notice and had… Read more

The heart of God

It was now the day before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. He had always loved those in the world who were his own, and he loved them to the very end. (verse 1) Read John 13:1–17, 31b–35 How can… Read more

Who betrays you, Lord?

After Jesus had said this, he was deeply troubled and declared openly, ‘I am telling you the truth: one of you is going to betray me.’ The disciples looked at one another, completely puzzled about whom he meant. One of the disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was sitting next to Jesus. Simon Peter motioned… Read more

Buried for life

I am telling you the truth: a grain of wheat remains no more than a single grain unless it is dropped into the ground and dies. If it does die, then it produces many grains. Those who love their own life will lose it; those who hate their own life in this world will keep… Read more

A ‘useless’ gift

Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, the man he had raised from death. They gave a dinner for him there, which Martha helped serve; Lazarus was one of those who were sitting at the table with Jesus. Then Mary took half a litre of a very expensive perfume… Read more

Palm Sunday hero

When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” (Verse 54) Read Matthew 27:11–54 In 2008 Pope Benedict XVI visited Australia. Because of my position at the time I was invited to several… Read more

Christ the cornerstone

The stone which the builders rejected as worthless turned out to be the most important of all. This was done by the Lord what a wonderful sight it is! This is the day of the Lord’s victory; let us be happy, let us celebrate! (verses 22-24) Read Psalm 118:1, 2, 19–29 I remember working as… Read more

Jesus is with you

When Jesus heard what had happened, he found the man and asked him, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’ The man answered, ‘Tell me who he is, sir, so that I can believe in him!’ Jesus said to him, ‘You have already seen him, and he is the one who is talking with… Read more
