Stand firm in the face of fear

2 April 2020

This fresh set of Daily Devotions is being provided for our LCA/NZ family, friends and visitors to help us to keep our eyes on Jesus as we face unsettling times. They can be used by families and individuals as part of the LCA/NZ’s Church@Home resources to encourage us and build trust in our Heavenly Father during this season of uncertainty and physical isolation.

Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8).

Read 1 Peter 5:6-11

Like many others, I have bravely confronted the majestic power of a lion from behind the safety enclosure of a zoo. They are spectacular creatures. And terrifying when roused to anger. It’s hard not to be awed by their indomitable gaze. Few could stand in the face of the fury of such a creature.

The above verse cautions us to watch out for the attack of our enemy, who, like a lion, seeks victims to devour. Satan will use a variety of tactics to draw us into erroneous belief. One of his favourites is to roar right in our face, projecting fear and worries and doubts, hoping that they will take root.

There’s a lot of fear going around at the moment. And into that turmoil he comes, sowing even more discord with suggestions like: ‘I’m going to be next’, ‘If I get sick, I’m done for’, ‘I’m all alone’ …

Lies. Recognise them for what they are. Get back to the source of your life and hope, and draw the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Protect your mind with the helmet of salvation. Feed from Jesus, the Bread of Life. Read up on everything that God promises to do for you. And stand firm. The battle is already won!

Verse 9-10 says: ‘Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are‘.

You are not alone. We are in this together. And if God is for us, who can stand against us?

Father God, thank you that the battle is won. Fill my mind with the promises of your goodness. Feed me daily from Jesus, who is the Bread of Life. Thank you that I am your child and you have promised to meet my needs. I cling to you in this crisis, knowing that you are immovable and eternal. Surround us, your people. Draw us together in your love. Amen.
