Essential workers

3 April 2020

This fresh set of Daily Devotions is being provided for our LCA/NZ family, friends and visitors to help us to keep our eyes on Jesus as we face unsettling times. They can be used by families and individuals as part of the LCA/NZ’s Church@Home resources to encourage us and build trust in our Heavenly Father during this season of uncertainty and physical isolation.

To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some (1 Corinthians 9:22).

Read 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

Our government has determined that teachers are considered essential workers. They will be educating our children during this crisis – online as well as in the classroom.

For congregations to flourish, God has decided that pastors are essential too (Ephesians 4:11).  Our essential role is to interpret God’s Word for God’s people and ensure that they are busy at work, proclaiming that ‘The Word of the Lord endures forever’ (1 Peter 1:24,25).

God has chosen to enlist all his children. You too are an essential worker, child of God. Spread the Word generously and far and wide! This is the irrefutable purpose of every Christian’s life.

Stay connected to as many people as possible by every available means, by old-fashioned telephone or online. Be bold and loving among those who have no bedrock in difficult times, and by all possible means ‘save some’.

Father, we are resistant to your call to serve. We have no courage of our own suitable to the task you have given us. By the words of your mouth and the abiding Spirit, enliven us. Set us on fire for the gospel so that the world will come and watch us burn for God.
