Twenty-three

21 March 2020

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul (verses l-3a ESV)

Read Psalm 23

Psalm 23 is a favourite for many people. It has been memorised in Sunday schools, quoted in movies and prayed by countless Christians. So what makes it so special?

Psalm 23 uses a series of rich images to describe the Christian life. One moment we are sheep being led to green pastures and still waters. We are enjoying much needed rest, peace and quiet.

Other moments in life are not so tranquil; such as those we spend in the valley of the shadow of death. This is no pleasant valley. The mountains surround us and darkness descends. We feel as though life is one trial after another. But God continues to guide us. He has more for us to experience.

The darkness departs and we find ourselves seated at a great banquet. The shepherd is now our host, filling our cup to the brim with choice wine. He whispers to us that we are his guests of honour and we need not fear this journey, because his goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our life.

Good Shepherd, follow me with your grace and mercy. Lead me to green pastures and still waters and restore my soul. Guide me through my dark valleys and lead me on to my heavenly home; for your love’s sake. Amen.
