The wise honour the Lord

27 January 2018

The way to become wise is to honour the LORD
he gives sound judgment to all who obey his commands.
He is to be praised for ever.
(verse 10)

Read Psalm 111

St John in the book of Revelation gives us a number of visions depicting worship in heaven:

Day and night the living creatures never rest from their
doxology of praise:
‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, the Almighty,
who was and who is, and who is to come.’ (4:8)
Every creature in heaven, on earth and in the world below, and in the sea, all living beings in the universe were singing:
‘To him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be praise and honour, glory and might,
for ever and for ever!’ (5:13)

If honouring and praising God is such an important and all-embracing part of eternal life in heaven, that surely shows us how important it is for Christians on earth to praise and honour the Lord. The psalm writer says that the way to become wise is to honour the Lord. Why is that?

The Lord is the creator and ruler of the universe. He does wonderful things beyond our understanding.

All who are delighted with them want to understand them.
All he does is full of honour and majesty; his righteousness is eternal.
The LORD does not let us forget his wonderful actions; he is kind and merciful.
He provides food for those who honour him;
he never forgets his covenant. (Psalm 111:2-5)

Lord, lead me to true wisdom by learning to see you in your power and glory and by acknowledging and praising you for your gracious love and compassion to me. Amen.
