The boy could play!

15 October 2019

David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much and chose him as the man to carry his weapons. Then Saul sent a message to Jesse: ‘I like David. Let him stay here in my service.’ From then on, whenever the evil spirit sent by God came on Saul, David would get his harp and play it. The evil spirit would leave, and Saul would feel better and be all right again.   (verses 21-23)

Read 1 Samuel 16:14-17:11

Ah! Music, music, music, what a great gift from God! As one who plays, listens to and composes music, I can identify with Saul in his moments of deep depression, anxiety and fear and his need to hear the right music played by a skilled musician. Music can be healing balm to troubled consciences. It was for Saul, because that young David – well, the boy could play!

The Lord has given us a great gift in music. I don’t know if I would ever be able to fully enjoy life as God’s child without the music he has given through his people over the centuries. When players and composers of music praise Father, Son and Holy Spirit and tell me of the grace of God in Jesus, I am encouraged in the soul. Whether their music is ancient, modern, music that is five hundred years old or five minutes old, it is a gift of God to you and me.

Praise the Lord with lyre and harp, with organs, guitars, pianos, trumpets and drums!

Thank you, Lord, for music that inspires me, moves me, teaches me, challenges me, comforts me and assures me of your gracious presence. Help me to sing the new song of praise to you all day long. Amen.
