See the signs

27 November 2019

False prophets appeared in the past among the people, and in the same way false teachers will appear among you. They will bring in destructive, untrue doctrines, and will deny the Master who redeemed them, and so they will bring upon themselves sudden destruction. Even so, many will follow their immoral ways; and because of what they do, others will speak evil of the Way of truth. In their greed these false teachers will make a profit out of telling you made-up stories. For a long time now their Judge has been ready, and their Destroyer has been wide awake!  (verses 1-3)

Read 2 Peter 2:1-10a

In my first year in Victoria, colleagues and I were required to go to Ballarat for a seminar. As I was driving, I told two others, also new to the area, to be navigators to alert us to the Ballarat exit.

The green highway signs gradually whittled away the kilometres and the clock told us we must be near our destination.

I said, ‘Now don’t forget, you are the navigators’ . ‘No worries’, came the reply. As we travelled we engaged in banter and chatter. Suddenly I realised that Ballarat was no longer appearing on the road signs. I became aware that the longer I kept driving the further away from our destination we were getting. I pulled over. We checked the map, turned around (not easy on a double-lane highway) and became more careful in reading the signs.

Staying on track – not getting side-tracked through the chatter and banter of life, finding your way in life – calls for readiness to look for the signs that bring you closer to Jesus, who is ‘the way’, ‘the truth’, and ‘the life’.

In your word, Lord Jesus, you show me your way. I bow before you. I tune my ears, mind and heart to you. Amen.
