Scripture come true

27 January 2019

Jesus rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. All the people in the synagogue had their eyes fixed on him, as he said to them, ‘This passage of scripture has come true today, as you heard it being read’. (verses 20,21)

Read Luke 4:14-21

Jesus was back in his home town of Nazareth. As usual, on the Sabbath he went to the local synagogue, the Jewish meeting place, where he read the Scriptures.

This time was different from other times. When he read from the prophet Isaiah, he was reading about himself and what he was on the brink of doing. He knew that his work on earth had begun. He was the person chosen by the Lord ‘to bring good news to the poor … proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people’.

Jesus was the person all the prophets had spoken about. He was the person who made Scripture come true.

God sent his Son, Jesus, into the world to fulfil Scripture and save people from their sins. He did this also for you. Praise him for what he has done.

God, our Father, thank you for sending Jesus to make Scripture come true. Thank you, Jesus, for your saving work for all people, including me. Holy Spirit, give me faith, so that I can know the truth and believe. Amen.
