Mission possible

27 February 2019

‘People will hand over their own brothers to be put to death, and fathers will do the same to their children; children will turn against their parents and have them put to death. Everyone will hate you because of me. But whoever holds out to the end will be saved.’ (verses 21,22)

Read Matthew 10:16-23

Jesus doesn’t hold anything back from his followers. He knows what problems they will face, and he tries to prepare them for it. ‘You will be persecuted, betrayed and hated because of me. Families will be divided. Be on your guard.’

Would you have accepted Jesus’ mission, knowing it might result in your death? It would have seemed an impossible task. I’m surprised the disciples didn’t all call in sick or excuse themselves with other more pressing matters. But they didn’t. What was their mission? It was simply to be witnesses, to tell what they had seen and heard about Jesus, the Messiah, even if people opposed them.

But Jesus also has good news for his followers. He doesn’t abandon them. He gives them a promise: ‘Whoever holds out to the end will be saved’. He knows more than they do about suffering, rejection and pain. Their task will be mission possible because he will be with them.

Whatever life throws at you, whether it’s ill-health, job loss, an accident or family tension, be assured that Jesus knows about it and cares about it. He will provide you with whatever you need. You can say with confidence, ‘God is with me’. It’s mission possible.

Jesus, remind me of your promise to me, and help me to be a good witness for you. Amen.
