Look to the life-giver
All living things look hopefully to you,
and you give them food when they need it.
You give them enough
and satisfy the needs of all. (verses 15,16)
It’s very likely that you will eat and drink today, just as you have done every day of your life. Today’s verses remind us that every crumb and every drop come directly from God. We might understand many of the processes of how food is grown, produced and distributed, but it still all comes from God.
But God doesn’t only give us food – he gives us life itself. There is no aspect of our living self that we have created ourselves. God alone is the giver and sustainer of life. Pause now. Look at your hands that are holding this book. Study the intricate terrain of your skin. Feel your eyes responding to every mental signal. Observe your breathing. This very second all of these things come directly from God.
How strange that of all God’s creatures we humans tend to forget this. How strange that we look to ourselves and to our technological proficiency for life. Return to reality, and look to God. Acknowledge your life as his gift, and trust him to satisfy all your needs.
Lord God, I praise you for life and health and every good thing. Help me to trust you for all good gifts. Amen.
