God’s servants

6 September 2019

For this reason you must obey the authorities—not just because of God’s punishment, but also as a matter of conscience.

That is also why you pay taxes, because the authorities are working for God when they fulfil their duties. Pay, then, what you owe them; pay them your personal and property taxes, and show respect and honour for them all.
(verses 5-7)

Read Romans 13:1-7

Every time I head off to work each morning by car, I need to be careful that I observe the road rules. I know that if I exceed the speed limit, or run a red light, or park where I shouldn’t park, then I run the risk of a hefty fine. But there is another reason. If I break the law, I am not only disobeying the government. I am also disobeying God.

God tells us in his word to obey the rules that our government sets down. The government is there for the good of the people in the land. They act as God’s servants to maintain good order, whether they choose to acknowledge this fact or not. Paul even says that you are to pray for your government (1 Timothy 2:2). So be honest at tax time. Observe the road rules. The people who lay down the law are serving God. Through them, God establishes peace, justice and order for your sake.

Heavenly Father, bless and guide the government of this land, so that all people may live in peace, security and dignity. Amen.
