Don’t forget

12 October 2019

The LORD does not let us forget his wonderful actions;
he is kind and merciful.
He provides food for those who honour him;
he never forgets his covenant.
He has shown his power to his people
by giving them the lands of foreigners.

(verses 4-6)

Read Psalm 111

Embarrassment and frustration often loom large for me when I forget something. The forgetfulness that often gets me into the most difficulty is when I forget to do what I promised to do. I told someone that I would call in tomorrow and I forgot to do it. I told my work colleagues that I would do that job today and then I forgot about it!

It seems that we humans are naturally forgetful. It is part of our flawed nature. Indeed, the Old Testament describes the place where the dead go as the place of forgetfulness. The great fear of the ancient people was that no-one would remember their name after they died. Surely it is our fear too.

Forgetfulness is not part of God’s character. He always remembers the commitments he has made to give us life, forgiveness and freedom in Jesus. You are remembered by the one who will never forget you, and you are loved by the one who will never forget his commitment of love for you.

Heavenly Father, with all my heart I thank you for your incredible acts of love to me in Jesus. With the thief on the cross I ask that would never forget about me. Help me to remember you. Amen.
