Dark, stormy nights

14 October 2017

Even if I go through the deepest darkness,
I will not be afraid, LORD, for you are with me.
Your shepherd’s rod and staff protect me.
   (verse 4)

Read Psalm 23

Ivan Southall’s novel Over the Top tells the story of Perry, an eleven-year-old boy who is woken in the middle of a stormy night. His mother is about to have a baby, and she must get to the hospital. They live on an isolated property with no telephone. Perry is sent to the neighbours to phone the hospital. It’s a terrible night with no moon. Perry is given a hurricane lamp, and he follows the light from the lamp as he makes his way down the road. His imagination runs wild sometimes, and the dark trees became monsters. He’s scared, but the lamp guides him safely to the neighbour’s house.
There are many times that can threaten your happiness, cause you stress, jeopardise your health and make you afraid. Storms can howl and the darkness can be frightening, but with Jesus at your side you can walk safely through the blackest night and the wildest storm.
Jesus loves you. He has died for you, he has saved you from eternal death, and he promises that he will be with you always. There is no need to be afraid.

Lord Jesus, thank you for your constant guidance and help, especially through the dark stormy nights when I am afraid. Amen.
