The whole point of what we are saying is that we have such a High Priest, who sits at the right of the throne of the Divine Majesty in heaven. He serves as high priest in the Most Holy Place, that is, in the real ten which was put up by the Lord, not by human hands. Every high priest is appointed to present offerings and animal sacrifices to God, and so our High Priest must also have something to offer. (verses 1-3)

Read Hebrews 8:1-13

It is always a comfort to have contacts in high places. Although you would not want to take unfair advantage of the situation, there is a sense of security in knowing that Uncle Joe is on the shire council, that your family friend is a member of parliament and that your cousin is a hot shot legal eagle. If you really needed a bit of extra help, they would be there.

When it comes to god, we all know that we have his ear any time we need it. But we also have the added comfort of our relationship with Jesus, who has a special place in God’s heavenly court. He is there to interceded on our behalf and has our unique interests at heart. His credentials for being listened to are unsurpassed; he is not only god’s Son but he also performed a great sacrifice for the Father on our behalf.

The ancient Jews depended on their priests to represent them before God and to perform the animal sacrifices to pay for their sins. Since the time of Jesus we have our own special high priest, who offered a sacrifice of his own life once and for all. He had ‘something to office’ indeed!

Dear Jesus, thank you for your great sacrifice and for the sure knowledge that you are always there for me. Amen.
