Christ knows no distance

27 March 2020

This fresh set of Daily Devotions is being provided for our LCA/NZ family, friends and visitors to help us to keep our eyes on Jesus as we face unsettling times. They can be used by families and individuals as part of the LCA/NZ’s Church@Home resources to encourage us and build trust in our Heavenly Father during this season of uncertainty and physical isolation.

CHRIST KNOWS NO DISTANCE

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid. You are with me. Your shepherd’s rod and staff comfort me (Psalm 23:4).

Read Psalm 23

Over the years Christian groups have assembled teams to go out and share God’s love with others. Tour groups come up with catchy names. One of those names popped into my mind when someone shared that they would be honouring the 14-day self-isolation rule as they returned from interstate.

‘Christ knows no distance.’

Some people are suggesting that the term ‘social distancing’ should have more accurately been termed ‘physical distancing’. We still want people to connect, even if it can’t be in the ways we are used to. People are using technology … from smart phones to the internet. Creativity is abounding. Didn’t someone once say, ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’?

But one thing that hasn’t changed through all this is God and his promises.

Jesus hasn’t moved one millimetre. He is with us. He name ‘Immanuel’ (God with us) still stands. The Bible contains many references to his faithfulness, including these two gems:

‘And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age‘ (Matthew 28:20b)

‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you‘ (Deuteronomy 31:6)

Maybe now is the time to mine the Bible for God’s promises of peace, comfort, faithfulness and love. After all, Christ knows no distance!

Dear Immanuel, loving God, while we get used to this ‘new normal’ for a time, of being physically apart from friends, colleagues and even family, please help us to remember that you are with us, right now, no matter where we are. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
