Care-less in the care of God

24 March 2020

This fresh set of Daily Devotions is being provided for our LCA/NZ family, friends and visitors to help us to keep our eyes on Jesus as we face unsettling times. They can be used by families and individuals as part of the LCA/NZ’s Church@Home resources to encourage us and build trust in our Heavenly Father during this season of uncertainty and physical isolation.

CARE-LESS IN THE CARE OF GOD

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God (Phil 4:6).

Read Philippians 4:1-7

I’m the sort of person who is wired to be stupidly organised. On any given day my mind is full of lists. What to do. When to do it. How said tasks will be accomplished.

One particular day we happened to be driving alongside the river near our estate. The view was quite spectacular. The sun was rising upon the water and a myriad of colours were reflecting across the landscape before us. A beautiful sight. Except I didn’t see it. My mind was busy running through the things I needed to do. I realised this fact halfway home. It was then that I knew something was up. In that moment I made a commitment to let some of these thoughts go.

I’ve been learning to take a page from the above verse. Jesus isn’t advocating for us to ignore our responsibilities, but I believe that he is inviting us to let go a bit. Some things aren’t all that important, after all. And others are, but they are beyond our ability to control.

The landscape is changing. As we stare into the unknown it is easy to worry while we each start to consider the road ahead. These troubles in our present day are real and sobering but they are not beyond our Father’s attention or his ability to reconcile. Has he not already given us Jesus? Why would he not be with us during the trials of this season?

We need to cling to the truth that God loves us. That he promises to be with us. If we can keep that in the forefront of our minds, the other things, useless things, start to slip away.

Magnify God in your personal situation, whatever it might be. Be care-less in the care of God. Give him your full, unfettered attention. Listen to his voice in each moment. Do you what you need to. Let go of the rest.

Dear Daddy, thanks that you love me with an everlasting love. The world is changing. But you are not. You never have and you never will. Help me to lean into the security of your embrace and to trust that your goodness and mercy will follow me all my days. I love you. Thank you for giving me Jesus. In his name I pray. Amen.
