Card carries young hope for change

16 September 2016

by LCA Communications

Raising awareness of social issues and connecting people across the world are the aims of a new international Lutheran postcard project.

Entitled ‘Note for Sale’, it has been initiated by South Australian lay worker Sophie Gerrie and her teammates from the Lutheran World Federation’s (LWF) Global Young Reformers Network.

In the lead-up to the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Sophie and her team hope to connect young people globally through the postcards, which carry the themes ‘Creation – Not for sale’, ‘Human Beings – Not for sale’, and ‘Salvation – Not for sale’. The idea is to buy a postcard, register it online, write down your ideas about the relevant subject and post it to someone elsewhere in the world when an address is sent to you. Then it’s a matter of waiting for what comes to your own letterbox.

The Note for Sale project was one initiative of last year’s Global Young Reformers workshop in Wittenberg, Germany, at which Sophie, the child and family support worker at St John’s Unley, represented the LCA. Delegates from around 140 LWF member churches came together at the event to learn from each other, share experiences and make team plans for ‘living reformation projects’.

Under the theme ‘Freed by God’s Love to Change the World’, the network aims to ‘encourage youth to participate in church and community life, strengthen existing youth ministry … and accompany churches in creating new programs’. It began in 2014 with the launch of an online catechism and the holding of a virtual (online) conference and ends in 2017 with reporting on local, regional and global outcomes at the LWF Twelfth Assembly.
