A school where ‘God abounds’

14 February 2018

by Francois Pienaar

As the only Christian school within a 400–kilometre radius of its hometown of Ceduna, South Australia, Crossways Lutheran School has a clear mission to the state’s West Coast community.

Crossways Lutheran School is a place where God abounds for its students across levels from Reception to Year 10.

It is a place where we can do his work, knowing he guides us in the relationships we build with the students, in the communications we share with each other, and in the ethos centered on God’s grace that we hold so dear.

Beginning each day with staff and student devotion, while incorporating Christian Studies, chapel, and Bible study in our program, contributes to a sense of purpose for the school. We are proud of the spiritual life of our school and believe it embeds the culture we are known for in the community.

We are a multicultural school, with Aboriginal students, as well as students from different ethnic backgrounds, so intercultural understanding is a vital part of living and working in our community.

Crossways holds an annual cultural celebration, at which students play traditional games and Aboriginal community members cook traditional food, such as wombat and kangaroo.

Our vision ‘Working towards a Brighter Future’ emphasises the need to support each other to be productive local and global citizens. Staff work to deliver a broad, inclusive curriculum, with culturally appropriate methods and content with high expectations. This creates an environment of engagement, participation and success.

We have improved school facilities, have a uniform which students are proud to wear and, as a team, have changed the view of the community towards our school. We believe these factors have led to a growth of almost 40 per cent in the school community since 2015.

We are in the process of setting up a Year 6 interstate exchange with Tarrington Lutheran School, Victoria. Our students also annually visit Navigator (Lutheran) College, Port Lincoln, which is also on Eyre Peninsula. Scholarships are offered for Crossways Year 10s to complete their senior schooling at Navigator.

The positive attitude and commitment of staff; the energy and enthusiasm of students; the care, love and support of parents; and the value placed on us by the wider community all contribute to making Crossways the amazing, blessed place it is. I thank our Lord for his blessing, as it is through him we bear the fruit of prosperity.

Francois Pienaar is Principal of Crossways Lutheran School.
