A love story we are part of

24 October 2018

When Rebecca saw Isaac, she got down from her camel and asked Abraham’s servant, ‘Who is that man walking towards us?’

‘He is my master’, the servant answered. So she took her scarf and covered her face.

The servant told Isaac everything he had done. Then Isaac brought Rebecca into the tent that his mother Sarah had lived in, and she became his wife. Isaac loved Rebecca, and so he was comforted for the loss of his mother. (verses 64-67)

Read Genesis 24:50-67

This is the story of two young people who each had their partner chosen for them, but who came to love each other very much. In each other they found comfort. Isaac had lost a much loved mother; Rebecca was far from her home and family. In marriage they found each other and began a long and fruitful partnership.

Through this marriage the promises God made to Abraham and his descendants move into another generation. Abraham would have told Isaac everything God had said to him and done for him to make sure his son and his family would ‘know the Lord’.                       ‘

Today marriage and the forming of new families continues. Through generations of such families the gospel has come to you and me. All the promises of God have become ours. Not to keep to ourselves, but to teach to our children and grandchildren. So that they too can claim the promises as their own.

Our task, now, is to make sure this message goes on for at least one more generation. It would be awful to know that it had all stopped with us.

Help me, Lord, to be as faithful with your gospel as those who came before me have been. Amen.
