A banquet of blessing

6 May 2017

You prepare a banquet for me,
where all my enemies can see me;
you welcome me as an honoured guest
and fill my cup to the brim.
I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life;
and your house will be my home as long as I live.
(verses 5,6)

Read Psalm 23

Sunday school picnics were a big thing when I was a child. There was fun and games for all. And the food! The trestle tables would be set up and then loaded with every conceivable sort of good thing to eat and drink. Nothing much has changed, has it, when you think of today’s sumptuous church dinners and teas?

We read today that God has set out a banquet for us. He’s put up the tables and loaded them with all sorts of wonderful goodies: peace, joy, strength, comfort, forgiveness – life itself. And more. We can come along and help ourselves to whatever we need as we go through life.

As we struggle against our enemies of sin and Satan, God is constantly providing us with a banquet of blessing. And that means that life has to be pretty good, doesn’t it?

Heavenly Father, thank you for lavishing your love on me. Thank you, also, that nothing can take your love away from me. Amen.
